Respite care

Long term respite care for older Australians

At MACG, we offer both long term care, and shorter respite stays. Long term respite care is a midpoint between the two; it's more than just a few days, but with an endpoint in mind. It's perfect for if a regular carer is going to be indisposed for a few weeks — recovering from an injury, perhaps, or heading abroad.

Long term respite care is available for older Australians in our homes, which are located right across Victoria. We provide quality care, meals cooked on site, and social and lifestyle activities, and much more.

Life in an MACG home

Our homes offering residential and respite aged care make you feel at home. With fewer beds, a communal atmosphere, and many activities on offer, there's no better place to come for long term respite care.

Helping you to feel at home

For our permanent residents, we provide the place that they call home. But we've worked hard so that even our respite visitors will feel at home during their stay. There's a warm community atmosphere in our homes, with engaging activities and friendly staff, and those who are here on respite care are free to enjoy everything available to our permanent residents. Additionally, we encourage people to bring some personal belongings from their homes, to help them settle in.

  • 24-hour access to qualified staff
  • Hotel services, like laundry
  • Tailored care to suit particular needs
  • Access to allied health services (for an additional cost)
  • Great tasting nutritious meals cooked on site

Helping our visitors stay fulfilled

There are many lifestyle programs and activities on offer at our MACG homes. There's so much to do, and so many opportunities to participate. Examples of activities that are regularly on offer include:

  • Pet and animal visits
  • Mobility and wellness classes
  • Seated Tai Chi
  • Movement to music
  • Walking groups
  • Meditation and relaxation
  • Memory and reminiscence programs
  • Sensory programs
  • Social, emotional, and pastoral support
  • Physiotherapy exercise classes

Stay connected to the community

All of our residential communities are partnered with local charitable organisations. Additionally, there are more charities that we partner with across all of our locations. People joining us for long term respite have many opportunities to take part in community life, such as:

  • Volunteering, making crafts to sell for fundraisers
  • Participation as a part of a group, or solo, to raise funds
  • Raising money for Beyond Blue and Cancer Council Australia, as well as local charities

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum amount of time you can be in subsidised respite care per year?

Victorians can access aged care respite for 63 days every financial year. This number is inclusive of both emergency and planned respite care. If approval is granted from an aged care assessor, extensions of 21 days can be added to that amount.

What do I need to pack for long term respite care?

We recommend that people bring the following when they come in for respite care:

  • At least three changes of clothes, all labelled with a name to avoid confusion
  • Relevant prescription medicine
  • Any phones, laptops or tablets that might be used for entertainment and communication
  • The contact numbers for friends and family
  • Any specific equipment needed for day to day life (e.g. a walking stick)
  • Toiletries
  • A list of dietary requirements

Although we supply linen and bedding, feel free to bring your own if that's what you'd prefer.

Which health services are available during long term respite care?

At MACG, we partner with allied health professionals to deliver a suite of health services. From occupational therapy and optometry to remedial massage and dentistry, there are many different services available for access within our home. However, costs are not covered by MACG.
