How To Start The Process Of Moving Into Aged Care

If you and your loved one have decided that they need to move into an aged care facility, you might not know where to even begin. Here is the process you need to follow when moving into an aged care home.

Step 1 - Assessment

Your aged family member needs to be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). This assessment will determine the eligibility of your relative for access to aged care facilities and which particular service is applicable: residential care in an aged care home, residential respite care, short-term restorative care or transition care.

Step 2 – Wait for a letter of approval

Once the assessment has been completed and processed, and if your loved one has been deemed eligible, they will receive a letter of approval.

Step 3 – Establish costs

The pathway into an aged care home now begins. One of the first requirements is to work out the costs the resident will be responsible for. These costs can include daily living costs, accommodation and additional services if applicable. The Australian government does contribute towards the costs for permanent aged care home placements.

Step 4 – Finding a suitable aged care facility

Aged care homes differ in the services and amenities they offer so it is important that you find a care home that covers all of your loved ones’ needs. You can find the most suitable provider by conducting visits or scheduling a tour if these are offered. During a visit, be sure to ask about the types of care and activity programmes offered.

Step 5 – Apply for a place

When you have found a provider you are happy with, the next step is to apply for a place. It is advisable to apply to more than one care facility in case your first choice isn’t available. Once you have filled out the relevant paperwork, you will have to wait to receive an offer of acceptance.

Step 6 - The resident agreement

Before your loved one can move into the aged care home, a resident agreement has to be signed. This legally binding document sets out: the care and services available, the fees you will have to pay, how such fees can be paid as well as the rights and responsibilities of the resident.
